of Russian Women Abroad Victoria moved
to Canada from Ukraine. She has been trying to find a job without much
success. Eventually, she managed to establish her own business, which gives
her satisfaction and provides a living.
I arrived to Canada almost 2 years ago.
We live in a small town. Before I
came here I lived in a big city in the Ukraine. At times, I feel a little bit
uncomfortable living in a small town. I miss seeing many people on the streets,
traffic, big city.., but I have learned how to deal with it. I learned how to
deal with homesickness as well. First year it was very hard and I cried a lot.
Now I know, at least, what to do with these sad feelings and I can share it with
anyone who may be interested.
Living in Ukraine, I was an English
teacher. Here, in Canada, I decided not to continue teaching because of few
reasons. I was trying to find a job the first year, but with no results. Even
though I taught English in Ukraine, it's a very big difference when you arrive
here and everyone speaks very fast and my language knowledge was not enough to
find any good job here. I was hoping I could find a job as a Russian teacher,
but who needs Russian here in a small town and who needs my English here where
everyone speaks it better than I do anyway! So, I thought, I would start my own
business and will operate it from home. This way, I thought I will be able to
work whenever I want, I would have no boss, and I will be able to watch our kids
when they come from school, etc.
I liked the idea of building web sites
for profit. I did not know almost anything about the computers in general and
web design in particular. Now my web design company is 1 year old, I gained some
experience, but keep learning all the time and growing professionally. I must
say that we did not have lots of money to spend on advertising and with big
competition it was not easy to start own business. It needs LOTS of money to
start a business here, as well as all the software, computers are very
expensive. So, I decided I will learn everything myself. I have gotten HTML
knowledge (not perfect though) and still need to learn programming. I have found
very good sources where you can ask any question about programming and web
design. My financial situation was not very good at all before. But now things
have changed!
Thanks God!
